English for Speakers of Other Languages
At St. John’s, we seek to offer hospitality and friendship to immigrants and refugees in our local community through ESOL classes (English for Speakers of Other Languages). Join us in serving our neighbors as an ESOL volunteer (tutor or childcare worker) or by giving through St. John’s to support this community outreach.
Fridays, 9:45 – 11:00 a.m.
We offer a class for mothers with small children. Fatima, from Iraq, oversees the children and often cooks delicious snacks for the group. There are opportunities for female volunteers to help with childcare alongside Fatima. For more information or to volunteer, contact Karen Mahan (coordinator) at email@example.com.
Wednesdays, 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.
We offer a weekly program of conversation and one-on-one tutoring for both women and men. Volunteer tutors and students commit to meet together for six weeks (see session dates below). IRIS (Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services) connects interested students with St. John’s. We pair same-gender tutors and students on a first-come, first-serve basis. For more information or to volunteer, contact coordinators Michele Sigg (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Tanya Walker (email@example.com).
